(KXAN) -- This week, lawmakers on Capitol Hill heard from 160 children and teens living with Type 1 diabetes (T1D).The group is asking Congress renew funding for the Special Diabetes Program, known as SDP, backed by the National Institute of Health.“The Special Diabetes Program was directly linked to the first ever disease modifying therapy for Type 1 diabetes that actually delays the onset of Type 1 for up to two years,” said Aaron Turner Phifer with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, or JDRF.“The program has gotten us closer than we've ever been to a cure,” said Turner Phifer. “The kids will be up on Capitol Hill advocating to their members of Congress to renew that program.”More than 1.4 million Americans live with Type 1 diabetes, according to the JDRF.Without Congressional action, the Special Diabetes Program will expire at the end of September.“We're very confident that Congress is going to extend this program. AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) -- Here’s the Central Texas bird forecast for the month, courtesy of Travis Audubon. Learn more about Central Texas birds and bird-related events for all ages at travisaudubon.org or by calling 512-300-BIRD. Follow Travis County Audubon at www.facebook.com/travisaudubon. It might be hard for us to celebrate the overwhelming heat, but some birds find something to sing about. Get up a little earlier to hear them as they often seek shade later in the day. Carolina Wrens and Northern Cardinals are some of the early risers, singing before and at daybreak. You may hear Northern Mockingbirds imitating other birds with three to six repetitions, before switching to another tune.  White-winged Doves chime in with their “who cooks for you” calls. Keep an ear out for the House Finch’s musical song, too. In the late afternoon and early evening it’s not unusual for these species to sing again before going to roost.Carolina Wren Singing PHOTO: Jane TillmanRed-hot House Fi...

By CHRIS MEGERIAN, SEUNG MIN KIM and KARL RITTER (Associated Press)VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday blasted as “absurd” the absence of a timetable for his country’s membership in NATO, injecting harsh criticism into a gathering of the alliance’s leaders that was intended to showcase solidarity in the face of Russian aggression. The broadside from Zelenskyy could renew tensions at the summit shortly after it saw a burst of goodwill after Turkey agreed to advance Sweden’s bid to join NATO. Allies hope to resolve the seesawing negotiations and leave Vilnius with a clear path forward for the alliance and its support for Ukraine.Officials have drafted a proposal, which has not been publicly released, on Ukraine’s potential membership. U.S. President Joe Biden expressed support during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, but Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter that he was not satisfied.“W...

Dining at The Regular, a modern fine-dining restaurant that opened last week downtown, is like taking a seat at owners Sydney Younggreen and Brian De Souza’s own dinner table.Every detail throughout the 44-seat restaurant, located at 1432 Market St., has been carefully thought out: from the old school rock-n-roll music playing on the speakers to the quirky yet cozy furniture in the lounge; from the central fireplace that’s a nod to the one in their own home to the green touches in honor of Younggreen’s favorite color.
