Rivalry games, travel demands are top concerns as ACC officials plan to tackle new scheduling format Atlantic Coast Conference officials are headed to North Carolina this week for their fall meetings. Perhaps Dallas or one of two California spots — Stanford or Berkeley — would have been a more appropriate location as a new scheduling format is discussed to accommodate the league’s expansion.Travel to those locations would have given athletic directors and administrators a preview of what they will be asking of their teams and fans when SMU, Stanford and Cal join the league in 2024.League officials are expected to discuss a new scheduling format for next year’s debut of the 17-team football conference. North Carolina coach Mack Brown and others are concerned about possibly losing rivalry games — a concern that other leagues, like the Big Ten, are also grappling with among all the changes.“With all this realignment going on, it’s kind of crazy,” Brown said Monday. “I’m a traditionalist and I love rivalries. I think championships and rivalries are the two things that this ...

Banned Fagioli apologizes for ‘naive’ betting error, Newcastle giving ‘full support’ to Tonali TURIN, Italy (AP) — In his first public words since being implicated in a betting scandal, Juventus midfielder Nicolò Fagioli has apologized for a “naive error” but also hit out at newspapers for writing what he described as “rubbish.”Newcastle has also spoken out in response to midfielder Sandro Tonali being investigated by Italian authorities, saying the player had the club’s “full support.” Fagioli was banned for seven months by the Italian soccer federation for betting violations, and ordered to undergo treatment for a gambling addiction. On Wednesday, he issued a statement on his Instagram account. “I thought I would start by apologizing not only to Juventus fans but to all fans in the world of soccer and sport for the naive error that I made,” Fagioli wrote. “But instead I am obliged to start with the rubbish that newspapers write about me just to put me in a bad light with thousands of falsehoods…or maybe better, just to get a couple more views. Whether Jim Jordan wins the speakership or not, voters in his Ohio district will stand by their man URBANA, Ohio (AP) — Rep. Jim Jordan, so far, has failed to get the needed votes to become House Speaker but his fight for the coveted leadership role isn’t done, and the devotion of many of his constituents back in Ohio seems unwavering. In Washington, Jordan has made a name for himself as a conservative pugilist — in line with his avid supporter, former President Donald Trump — by being unafraid to duke it out in the political arena, especially against his Democratic colleagues. He’s a founder of the Freedom Caucus, a contingent of cantankerous and often chaotic far-right House Republicans, and he’s one of the loudest voices continuing to perpetuate false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. In Ohio, Jordan is a hometown boy whose Ohio State University wrestling coach title, conservative policies and never-say-die persona on Capitol Hill have earned him more devotion than he’s currently receiving in Congress. “He says what he believes in, be...
