ST. LOUIS - A retooled St. Louis Cardinals rotation now includes one of the team's most coveted arms this offseason.Sonny Gray, the 2023 American League Cy Young runner-up and three-time All-Star, joins the Cardinals on a three-year, $75 million contract. At 34 years old, Gray is the Cardinals' third starting pitcher addition before the Winter Meetings even begin. St. Louis added veterans Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson on one-year deals last week. As it stands, Gray is arguably the headliner of a retooled rotation. Could the Cardinals land Japanese star Yoshinobu Yamamoto? Gray says St. Louis was at the top of his wish list this offseason. "I wanted to be a Cardinal," he said early in his introductory press conference Monday evening. "Me and my family, we truly wanted to be here," said Gray. "We're glad that it worked out, and we get to be here. Very, very excited to be a Cardinal." Gray is coming off one of his best big-league seasons, which led to a 2.79 ERA and 183 strikeouts over...

Chicken and potatoes everyone will love

By David Tanis, The New York TimesFor a cool-weather meal that feeds a crowd, consider a braise. Slow simmered and deeply flavored, it has a number of attractive qualities. For one thing, it benefits from steeping in its own juices; cooking it several hours ahead of serving, even a day before, is ideal. The flavors intensify, mature, strengthen. The best braising cuts include beef chuck, lamb shoulder or pork shoulder. But chicken is the easiest to braise, since it takes less time to cook than red meat. Legs are best. I like both thighs and drumsticks, sometimes cooking them as a whole leg, sometimes in two pieces. For a main, I went with a dish that approximates the Spanish chicken and potatoes in salsa brava I tasted years ago in Madrid. But I added ancho chile, traditionally used in Mexican cooking, for a different kind of heat. And I couldn’t resist adding a bit of cumin, so the result is a bit of a hybrid. Along with a splash of wine and chopped tomato, it is hearty and warming w...

Quick Cook: Make this Alphabet Soup for All Ages

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:00:45 GMT

This is the most requested soup across all three generations in my family, because it has something for everyone — nostalgia for the grandparents, kale and hearty vegetables for the parents and, for the kids, letter-shaped pasta. It’s a forgiving recipe, subject to the whims of toddler food preferences, refrigerator contents and seasonal availability. But what makes or breaks this recipe (beyond the obvious requisite that it be salted enough … please, PLEASE season your soup!) is the quality of the pasta and its preparation.I will only endeavor to make a pot of this soup, if I have a package of Eduardo’s Alfabeto pasta (made by Dolce Italia Foods), because the letters are actually big enough to identify in your mouth or, let’s be honest, splattered into sentences by first graders across the dinner table. Be sure to cook the pasta al dente in salted water and keep it separate from the soup until it’s time to eat. Just ladle the soup over individual portions of the alphabet pasta so th...

If they beat the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier that day, the Warriors win their Group C. If Minnesota beats Oklahoma City, the Warriors will have to beat the Kings by a substantial point differential to win a three-way tiebreaker over Sacramento and Minnesota, as all three would be 3-1 in group play.“It’ll be fun. A lot of fun. It’ll be a lot like Game 7, the atmosphere, the excitement, the angst,” said Draymond Green, who returns from his five-game suspension for Tuesday’s game. “The feeling I’m expecting is that i’ll feel like a Game 7.”Heading into Tuesday’s games, the Warriors have a plus-5 point ...
